The Pastor’s Pen

By the time you read this, I will have been back from my sabbatical for about a month. I want you to know how grateful I am to have had this time for rest, study and renewal. Even though I found myself missing the day to day routine of congregational ministry, the eight weeks that I was away gave me a wonderful opportunity to be recharged in body, mind, and spirit.

I can report that I was able to get done much (but not all) of the reading that I had hoped to do. Mary Beth and I had the chance to worship together in a number of neighboring congregations. I got out of town for a couple of retreats, including one that Mary Beth and I attended together. And I enjoyed gardening, going for long walks, and taking advantage of some of the beautiful bicycle trails in Lake County. Overall, it was a very good break!

I am especially grateful to those who kept things running smoothly at St. Andrew while I was gone, including Anita Pahlman, who took on added responsibilities in the church office; Pastors Bob Hereth, Amy Becker-Perez and Daniel Shutters, who preached and helped lead worship on Sunday mornings; Tina Routledge and the rest of this year’s Vacation Bible School staff; Audrey Hamil, who was the driver and chaperone for the work camp trip to Middletown, Ohio; Barb Binversie, who coordinated our congregation’s involvement in the Mundelein summer lunch program; and John Bestler and the many volunteers who worked so hard getting rid of the water and cleaning the church basement following the storms and flooding in July. My sincere thanks to all of you!

As we look ahead to the fall schedule and all the programs and activities of the coming year, I am, most of all, grateful to God. God is the one who has brought us together as a community of faith. God is the one who has given us the mission of sharing Christ. And God is the one who empowers us so that we can give that mission our best. May God bless us, as pastor and congregation, so that we would be a blessing to others, and so that our life together would faithfully bear witness to him.

With deep gratitude,

Pastor Selbo
