The Pastor’s Pen

“Let your light so shine before others, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”

– Matthew 5:16

Those are words that are spoken each time a person is baptized.  And those are words that it’s good for us to focus on now that we have entered the season of Epiphany.

The main symbol of the season of Epiphany is light.  During Epiphany, we are reminded of the light of the star that led the wise men to Bethlehem.  We are reminded that Jesus is the light of the world.  And we are reminded that you and I, as Jesus’ followers, are called to let our light shine before others.

Epiphany comes from a Greek word, epiphaneia, that means “appearing” or “being revealed.”  The season of Epiphany is about God appearing – about God revealing himself to the world.

The New Testament tells us that God has revealed himself “in many and various ways” (Hebrews 1:1) – through the law given to Moses, through the words of the prophets, through the beauty and wonder of creation, through the voice of conscience that helps guide our actions.  But more than in any other way, God has revealed himself through Jesus. As Jesus himself says, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9).  It’s in Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection that we see most clearly who God is and what God is like.

Now that Jesus is no longer physically on the earth, it’s through Jesus’ body, the church, that God chooses to reveal himself.  It’s through Jesus’ body – you and me and all believers – that God reveals himself to the world.

Does that sound too incredible to be true, that God would reveal himself through us?  Incredible or not, it’s true!  Jesus says to us, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). It’s through us – or more accurately, it’s through Jesus living in us – that the people around us are able to see God.  The light of Jesus shines today through you and me.

That’s our purpose.  That’s the reason that we are here, both as individuals and as a congregation – to reveal God to others by letting our light shine.  Through our words, our actions, and our attitude, people ought to be able to see the light of Jesus shining in us.

During this season of Epiphany we are reminded that our God-given calling is to let our light shine.  Are we are reminded that it is because Jesus is living in us that we are able to fulfill that calling.

Happy Epiphany!
